Rushdie survived... I am shocked:
Attacker Mataar said - had read the pages written by Rushdie, he attacked Islam, so he did not like it
The man accused of murderous attack on Indian-origin British-American author Salman Rushdie in New York is astonished at his survival. Hadi Matar, 24, attacked Rushdie 10-15 times with a knife when he arrived at the Chautauqua Institution at 11 a.m. on July 12.
In an interview given to the New York Post, the accused Matar said – I was surprised when I heard that he had survived. I didn't think they would survive. I respect Ayatollah, the religious leader of Iran . I think he is a great person. I had read a few pages of Rushdie's novel. All I would say about him (Rushdie) is that I don't like that person. I don't think he is a good person. He attacked Islam. He attacked the beliefs and faith of the believers of Islam.
The attack has no link with Iran's Revolutionary Guard
Matar is sympathetic to Shia extremism and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Investigating agencies were investigating this angle, but the accused told that he was not in contact with Iran's Revolutionary Guard. He did not do this attack at the behest of anyone. Matar said he had learned from a tweet that Rushdie would be attending an event at the Chautauqua Institution.
The reason for the attack is unclear
. A fatwa was issued against Rushdie 33 years ago to kill him. This fatwa was issued regarding his book 'The Satanic Verses'. Islamic fundamentalists were incensed by the book. The attack on him in New York is being linked to this. However, the accused Matar has not yet disclosed why he had attacked.
Rushdie's condition improved
Rushdie was airlifted and admitted to the hospital. His condition remained critical. However, he was taken off the ventilator after surgery. He is still hospitalized.
